Hidden Lake, NWT  2002

Alf,

On this year’s summer jaunt to the NWT we took along the new portage yoke for our 170. Good thing. The various canoe routes of the Ingraham Trail out of Yellowknife nearly all involve portages. We elected to paddle in the marvelously pristine surroundings of Hidden Lake, which require three portages in a half day to get to the lake. Once there, the camping, paddling and hiking were all first rate, although the obvious campsites show signs of use and some abuse. (In this Canadian Shield environment, the options for finding a flat spot for your tent are pretty much confined to the obvious campsites.) The portage yoke worked like a charm – and carrying a 55 – 60 lb PakCanoe is way preferable to wearing an 85 lb hardshell boat. Thanks.

Jan Edick
