Pakboats on the Horton River, NWT

Horton River, NWT        Summer, 1998

Dear ScanSport,

During the month of july in 1998, we used three Pakboats to travel about 500 km of the remote Horton River in Canada's North West Territories and it is my pleasure to tell you that the PakCanoes performed beyond our expectations. We began our journey with the canoes at the international airport in Toronto where the canoes were loaded on the plane we traveled on as part of our checked baggage. It was a big relief knowing with certainty that we'd have our canoes when we began the trip. Because we were able to fly to the river with our party of six and the PakCanoes all inside a single engine bush plane, it cost less money to purchase the canoes and bring them with us than it would have to rent the canoes and be forced to use a twin engined plane. Now that we've got the boats, our next fly-in trips will be much more cost effective than they've ever been in the past.

During the five weeks we spent making our way to the Arctic Ocean, the PakCanoes went through some of the most wild landscape to be found anywhere on Earth. The canoes were subjected to the rigors of rapids and rocks on a daily basis and in spite of the fact that we couldn't baby them, they performed extremely well. PakCanoes are much more durable than their appearance suggests and I have no qualms about recommending them to anyone who is looking for a durable wilderness craft.

Even on the tundra in a strong wind it only took us twenty minutes to assemble the canoes. The mountain of gear required for such an extended trip easily fit into the canoes, and there was no problem keeping even the heavy load at the beginning of the trip high and dry.

All the gear we took on this trip had to be reliable because we were carrying a very precious cargo, our two sons aged 11 and 9. From the research we did before finalizing our gear selection, we were quite confident that the PakCanoes would be up to the task. I am glad to report that they exceeded our expectations and proved to be an even better choice than we were anticipating.

Thanks again for making such a great canoe.

Rolf, Debra, Kyle and Brendan Kraiker
